Mariah Carey’s latest film Precious has been gaining good reviews lately and is predicted as a strong contender in the upcoming Oscar season. The movie which was set in New York in 1987 was based from the novel Push by American author Sapphire. The film premiered last January at the Sundance Festival where it won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for best drama. It also won the People’s Choice award at the Toronto Film Festival last month.

In the movie the singer who recently released her 12th studio CD ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel‘, ditched her glamorous image and went dowdy, a far cry from her previous movie roles. Directed by Daniel Lee, Carey plays the role of social worker, Mrs. Weiss, who was set out to help an obese, HIV positive teen Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones who was made pregnant by her father twice.

Precious is set to be released next month. Other castmembers include Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and newcomer Gabby Sidebe who plays the role of Claireece.
