Madonna’s adoption bid rejected
Malawi High Court ruled on Friday that Madonna will not be allowed to adopt a Malawian girl named Mercy James.

Reports states that Madonna’s bid had been rejected because she was not a resident of Malawi and there is a residency requirement imposed on prospective parents.
Alan Chinula, Madonna’s lawyer said he had filed an appeal over the ruling with the Supreme Court.
Mercy comes from the same orphanage as Madonna’s 3-year-old son, David Banda whose adoption was completed last year without the said requirements.
“I just filed the notice of appeal this afternoon on instructions from my client,” Chinula told Reuters. “I’m currently studying the judgment so that I can come up with the grounds to appeal.”
Judge Esimie Chombo warned against celebrity adoptions such as this because they might lead to child trafficking.
“It is necessary that we look beyond the petitioner … and consider the consequences of opening the doors too wide,” Chombo said in the ruling. “By removing the very safeguard that is supposed to protect our children, the courts … could actually facilitate trafficking of children by some unscrupulous individuals.”
