John Travolta Drops Bahamas Extortion Case
Saying it was time to move on from a situation that “continued to take a heavy emotional toll on my family,” John Travolta has reportedly dropped an extortion case that stemmed from the January 2009 death of his son in the Bahamas.
Prosecutor Neil Braithwaite, who filed the motion to drop the cases against Tarino Lightbourne and former lawmaker Pleasant Bridgewater, said that “the Travolta family has said that this matter has caused them unbelievable stress and pain and they wish to put this whole thing behind them.”
Travolta had previously accused Lightbourne of trying to extort $25 million from him in exchange for a promise not to release private information about the death of the actor’s son Jett. Lightbourne, an ambulance driver, allegedly sought the help of Bridgewater, who was then a member of the Bahamian senate. Bridgewater eventually resigned after she was charged.
The case had been scheduled for retrial after a judge declared a mistrial when a lawmaker claimed that one of the suspects would be absolved, although the jury was still deliberating the decision.
