Andy Whitfield Quits “Spartacus,” Faces Cancer Anew

Andy Whitfield will not be returning for the second season of the Starz series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” to face another battle with cancer, which has recurred several months after the actor appeared to have defeated the disease.

In a statement, Whitfield said he was quitting the show to resume aggressive treatment for the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “With a sense of disappointment, I will step aside from the project as Spartacus‚ where most of the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to pursue on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support you have given so far,” Whitfield said.

The network has yet to make any decision about the future of the series. However, a prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” is set to be shown starting January next year. The prequel, which shows the story before the arrival of Spartacus, will focus on the characters played by Whitfield’s co-stars Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” will comprise six episodes
