“All My Children” Actor James Mitchell dies at 89

James Mitchell who became well-known with his role as the gruff patriarch Palmer Cortland on the long-running ABC series All My Children had died last Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 89 years old. According to his partner, Albert Wolsky, Mitchell suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, complicated by pneumonia.

Mitchell was a regular for 3 decades in the popular soap, appearing in more than 300 episodes of the said show. His  final TV appearance was on All My Children’s 40th anniversary episode earlier this month. Mitchell had a degree in theatre from Los Angeles City College and he began his career with the American Ballet Theater.

As for his role with All My Children, Wolsky says, “He really enjoyed it. The meaner he could be, the happier he was. Actors love to play the villain. He loved playing mean.”
